Rebecca Woodmass is a soprano who specializes in new music. Praised for the beauty of their voice and the fearlessness of her musical interpretation and career choices, they have collaborated with countless composers to premiere new work and explore the edges of the capacity of the human voice.
Since her professional new music début at the age of 19 at the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's New Music Festival, she has collaborated as a soloist with Chants Libres compagnie lyrique de création (Pierre Michaud, Kristen Norderval, Pauline Vaillancourt), McGill University, Opera McGill, and the McGill Chamber Orchestra (Patrick Hansen, Julian Wachner, Guillaume Bourgogne, Jason Noble, Donatienne Michel-Dansac), Ensemble Musikfabrik, the SMQC (Walter Boudreau), and many others.
Rebecca has a strong and affectionate relationship with the art of choral singing, having been raised in the Mennonite Church on the Canadian Prairies in Steinbach, MB. As a chorister, she has performed with the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul (Jordan de Souza, Jonathan Oldengarm, Jean-Sébastien Vallée), the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (Andrew Megill, Kent Nagano), the Choir of Trinity Wall Street (Julian Wachner), and the Rolling Stones.
Favorite roles include Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos), the Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte), Young Patricia (The Trials of Patricia Isasa), Poppea (L'incoronazione di Poppea), and Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel). After taking a year off the solo circuit, they are looking for opportunities to perform contemporary classical and musical theatre work that will speak truth to power, challenge patriarchy and capitalism, tell queer and trans stories, and bring beauty to thirsty ears and hearts.
